It serves as the county seat of Russell County and is part of the Kingsport–Bristol (TN)–Bristol (VA) Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

- Lebanon is situated in the southwestern part of Virginia, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including the Clinch Mountain to the north and the Holston River to the south.
