Russell County, Virginia is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,781. The county seat is Lebanon. The county was established in 1786 from a portion of Washington County and is named for William Russell, a prominent figure in the early history of the state.

Russell County was formed in 1786 from Washington County. It was named after William Russell, who was a soldier and pioneer in the area. The county has a rich history, including its role in the early settlement of the region and its involvement in the American Civil War.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 477 square miles (1,235 km²), of which 474 square miles (1,228 km²) is land and 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²) (0.7%) is water.
