Smyth County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 29,000. The county seat is Marion.

Smyth County was formed in 1832 from parts of Washington and Wythe counties. It was named after General Alexander Smyth, a distinguished military figure and political leader.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Smyth County is situated in the southwestern part of Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 452 square miles, of which 451 square miles is land and 1.3 square miles (0.3%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were approximately 29,000 people residing in the county. The population density was 64 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other racial and ethnic groups.

The economy of Smyth County is diverse, with significant contributions from manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare. The county is home to several manufacturing plants and agricultural enterprises.
