Leena Peltonen-Palotie (1952–2010) was a Finnish geneticist who made significant contributions to the field of human genetics. She is best known for her work on the genetics of human diseases, particularly those that are common in Finland due to the country's unique genetic heritage.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Peltonen-Palotie was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1952. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Helsinki, where she also earned her PhD in molecular genetics in 1978.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing her PhD, Peltonen-Palotie worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She returned to Finland in 1987 to establish a research group at the National Public Health Institute (KTL), where she served as the director of research until 1998.

In 1998, Peltonen-Palotie was appointed as the professor of medical genetics at the University of Helsinki. She also served as the head of the Department of Human Genetics at UCLA from 2003 to 2007.

Peltonen-Palotie's research focused on the genetics of human diseases. She made significant contributions to the understanding of several genetic disorders, including lactose intolerance, atherosclerosis, and schizophrenia.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Peltonen-Palotie passed away in 2010, but her legacy continues to influence the field of human genetics. In recognition of her contributions, the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) established the Leena Peltonen Prize for Excellence in Human Genetics in 2012.
