Li Keqiang

Li Keqiang (born 1 July 1955) is a prominent Chinese politician who served as the Premier of the People's Republic of China from 2013 to 2023. He is a member of the Communist Party of China and was a major figure in the country's Fifth Generation of Chinese leadership.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Li Keqiang was born in Dingyuan, Anhui province. He studied law at the prestigious Peking University where he became involved in student politics. He later earned a PhD in economics from the same institution, making him one of the most highly educated leaders in the history of the People's Republic of China.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Li Keqiang began his political career in the Communist Youth League, where he worked his way up to become the league's secretary in 1993. He was later appointed as the governor of Henan province in 1998 and then as the Party Secretary of Liaoning province in 2004.

In 2007, Li was promoted to the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, the country's top decision-making body. He was appointed as the Premier of the People's Republic of China in 2013, succeeding Wen Jiabao. As Premier, Li was responsible for implementing economic and social policies, as well as overseeing the government's administration.

Economic Policies[edit | edit source]

During his tenure as Premier, Li Keqiang focused on economic reforms aimed at shifting China's economy from a manufacturing-based model to a service-based one. He introduced the "Likonomics" policy, which emphasized de-leveraging, structural reforms, and no stimulus. He also launched the "Internet Plus" strategy to integrate the internet with traditional industries and fuel economic growth.

Li Keqiang also prioritized health reforms during his time in office. He championed the Healthy China 2030 plan, which aimed to improve the national health service system and ensure health care access for all citizens. He also led efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in China, implementing strict measures to control the virus's spread.

Li Keqiang's tenure as Premier was marked by significant economic and social reforms. His policies have had a lasting impact on China's economy and health care system, shaping the country's development in the 21st century.
