Liam Charles (born Liam Charles Rhys Maynard) is a British television presenter, chef, and author. He is best known for his appearance on The Great British Bake Off in 2017, and later as a co-host of Bake Off: The Professionals alongside Tom Allen.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Charles was born in Hackney, London and grew up in nearby Walthamstow. He attended Westminster Kingsway College, where he studied catering, and later went on to study drama and theatre arts at Goldsmiths, University of London. Prior to his television career, he worked as a student support worker and a teaching assistant.
Career[edit | edit source]
Charles rose to fame as a contestant on the eighth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2017, where he quickly became a fan favourite for his unique baking style and quirky personality. Despite not winning the competition, he gained a large following and was subsequently invited to co-host Bake Off: The Professionals alongside comedian Tom Allen.
In addition to his television work, Charles has also released a cookbook titled Cheeky Treats: 70 Brilliant Bakes and Cakes in 2018. He has also worked as a food columnist for The Guardian and British Airways High Life magazine.
Charles has also been involved in various charitable initiatives, including hosting a bake sale in 2018 to raise funds for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Charles is openly gay. He has spoken publicly about his experiences with racism and homophobia, and is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and racial equality.
