Liebig's law

Liebig's Law of the Minimum, also known simply as Liebig's Law, states that growth is not controlled by the total amount of resources available, but by the scarcest resource (limiting factor). This principle was first conceptualized by the German scientist Justus von Liebig in the 19th century, primarily in the context of agricultural science. Liebig's Law has since been applied to various fields, including ecology and environmental management, illustrating its foundational importance in understanding resource limitation in natural and managed systems.

Liebig's Law of the Minimum suggests that if one of the essential plant nutrients is deficient, plant growth will be poor even if all other essential nutrients are abundant. In this analogy, the capacity of a barrel with staves of different lengths is limited by the shortest stave, and similarly, the growth of a plant is limited by the nutrient in shortest supply.
