Assistive device for people with hand tremors

Liftware logo

Liftware is a brand of assistive technology designed to help individuals with hand tremors or limited hand and arm mobility to eat more easily. The devices are particularly beneficial for people with conditions such as Parkinson's disease or essential tremor. Liftware products are developed to stabilize the utensil, thereby reducing the effects of tremors and allowing for a more comfortable and independent dining experience.

Products[edit | edit source]

Liftware offers two main products: Liftware Steady and Liftware Level.

Liftware Steady[edit | edit source]

Liftware Steady is designed to counteract hand tremors. It uses sensors and a small onboard computer to detect tremors and actively stabilize the attached utensil. The device can reduce the shaking of the utensil by up to 70%, making it easier for users to eat without spilling.

Liftware Level[edit | edit source]

Liftware Level is intended for individuals with limited hand and arm mobility, such as those with cerebral palsy or spinal cord injury. This device keeps the utensil level regardless of how the hand or arm is positioned, allowing users to eat with greater ease and less spillage.

Technology[edit | edit source]

The technology behind Liftware involves a combination of motion sensors, microprocessors, and actuators. These components work together to detect and counteract unwanted movements. The sensors detect the direction and intensity of the tremor, while the microprocessor calculates the necessary adjustments. The actuators then move the utensil in the opposite direction of the tremor, stabilizing it.

Development[edit | edit source]

Liftware was developed by Lift Labs, a company founded by Anupam Pathak. The company was later acquired by Google in 2014 and became part of Verily Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.. The acquisition allowed for further development and distribution of the Liftware products.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Liftware has had a significant impact on the lives of individuals with tremors and mobility issues. By enabling users to eat independently, it improves their quality of life and reduces the need for assistance during meals. The devices are often recommended by healthcare professionals as part of a comprehensive approach to managing tremor-related conditions.
