Dorsal radioulnar ligament
(Redirected from Ligamentum radioulnaris dorsale)
== Dorsal Radioulnar Ligament ==
The dorsal radioulnar ligament is a key anatomical structure located in the wrist. It is one of the two primary ligaments that stabilize the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), the other being the volar radioulnar ligament. The dorsal radioulnar ligament plays a crucial role in maintaining the proper alignment and function of the radius and ulna bones during forearm movements.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The dorsal radioulnar ligament is situated on the dorsal (posterior) side of the wrist. It extends from the dorsal aspect of the ulnar head to the dorsal surface of the distal radius. This ligament is part of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), which is a structure that provides support and stability to the DRUJ and the ulnar side of the wrist.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the dorsal radioulnar ligament is to stabilize the distal radioulnar joint, particularly during pronation and supination of the forearm. It prevents excessive dorsal displacement of the ulna relative to the radius, thereby ensuring smooth and coordinated movements of the forearm.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Injuries to the dorsal radioulnar ligament can lead to instability of the distal radioulnar joint, resulting in pain, limited range of motion, and functional impairment of the wrist and forearm. Such injuries are often associated with trauma, such as falls on an outstretched hand, or repetitive stress activities. Diagnosis of ligament injuries typically involves clinical examination and imaging studies such as MRI.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Management of dorsal radioulnar ligament injuries may include conservative measures such as rest, immobilization, and physical therapy. In cases of severe instability or persistent symptoms, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair or reconstruct the ligament.
