Lillian Holland Harvey
American nurse and educator
Lillian Holland Harvey (October 3, 1912 – July 27, 1994) was a pioneering American nurse and educator, best known for her contributions to nursing education and her role in desegregating nursing schools in the United States. She served as the dean of the Tuskegee Institute School of Nursing for nearly three decades, where she was instrumental in advancing the curriculum and integrating the nursing program.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Lillian Holland Harvey was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and grew up in a time when opportunities for African Americans, especially women, were severely limited. Despite these challenges, she pursued higher education with determination. Harvey attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She later obtained a Master of Arts in Nursing Education from Columbia University in New York City.

Harvey began her career as a nurse and quickly moved into the field of nursing education. In 1945, she became the dean of the Tuskegee Institute School of Nursing, a position she held until 1973. During her tenure, she was a driving force behind the school's accreditation and the development of its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which was the first of its kind in the state of Alabama.
