Limbu people
Limbu people are an ethnic group originating from the Himalayan region of Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling, and parts of Bhutan. They are also known as Yakthung and are recognized as one of the indigenous nationalities of Nepal.

The history of the Limbu people dates back to the 7th century. They are believed to have migrated from Tibet during the period of the Lichhavi dynasty. The Limbu people have their own distinct culture, language, and religion, which is known as Yuma Samyo or Yumaism.
Language[edit | edit source]
The Limbu people speak the Limbu language, also known as Yakthungpan. It is a Sino-Tibetan language and is written in the Sirijanga script, which was traditionally used to write religious and cultural texts.
Culture[edit | edit source]
The culture of the Limbu people is rich and diverse. They have their own traditional music, dance, and art forms. The Chyabrung is a popular traditional drum used by the Limbu people. They also have a unique form of dance known as the Yakthung Laas.
Religion[edit | edit source]
The majority of the Limbu people follow Yumaism, a shamanistic religion that worships the divine mother, Yuma Sammang. They also believe in a number of deities and spirits. Some Limbu people have adopted Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity.
Cuisine[edit | edit source]
The traditional cuisine of the Limbu people includes a variety of dishes made from locally available ingredients. Dhindo and Gundruk are staple foods. They also brew a traditional alcoholic beverage known as Tongba.
Social Structure[edit | edit source]
The Limbu people have a clan-based social structure. Each clan, known as a Phedangma, has its own distinct history and cultural practices. The Limbu people also have a traditional system of laws known as the Mundhum.
Notable Limbu People[edit | edit source]
Several Limbu people have gained prominence in various fields. Te-ongsi Sirijunga Xin Thebe was a Limbu scholar who revived the Sirijanga script. Subin Limbu is a beauty queen who won the Miss Nepal title in 2014.
