The state of Virginia has been represented in the United States Senate since 1789. Senators from Virginia are elected to serve six-year terms, and they are divided into three classes. The following is a list of all individuals who have served as U.S. senators from Virginia.
Current Senators[edit | edit source]
As of the current Congress, the senators from Virginia are:
- Mark Warner (Democrat), serving since January 3, 2009.
- Tim Kaine (Democrat), serving since January 3, 2013.
Historical Senators[edit | edit source]
Virginia has had a total of 60 senators since it became a state. Some notable past senators include:
- James Monroe (Democratic-Republican), who served from 1790 to 1794 and later became the fifth President of the United States.
- John Tyler (Whig), who served from 1827 to 1836 and later became the tenth President of the United States.
- Harry F. Byrd Sr. (Democrat), who served from 1933 to 1965 and was a prominent figure in Virginia politics.

Senators are divided into three classes for the purposes of elections:
- **Class 1**: This class of senators was last elected in 2018 and will be up for election again in 2024.
- **Class 2**: This class of senators was last elected in 2020 and will be up for election again in 2026.
- **Class 3**: This class of senators was last elected in 2022 and will be up for election again in 2028.
