List of cherimoya cultivars
Cherimoya (Annona cherimola) is a species of Annona from the family Annonaceae, and is known for its delicious fruit. The cherimoya tree is native to the Andes mountain range between Argentina and Colombia. The fruit is often considered one of the best-tasting fruits in the world, its taste being a blend of various tropical flavors. There are many different cherimoya cultivars, each with its own unique taste and texture.
Cultivars[edit | edit source]
Cherimoya cultivars can be divided into two main categories: those that are primarily grown for commercial production, and those that are favored by home gardeners and local markets.
Commercial Cultivars[edit | edit source]
- Bays - This cultivar is known for its large, heart-shaped fruits with a smooth, creamy texture and a sweet, slightly tart flavor.
- Booth - The Booth is a popular commercial cultivar due to its high yield and the consistency of its fruit.
- Fino de Jete - This Spanish cultivar is prized for its intense flavor and high sugar content.
Home Garden Cultivars[edit | edit source]
- Chaffey - A cultivar that is favored by home gardeners, the Chaffey produces medium-sized fruits with a rich, sweet flavor.
- Honeyhart - Known for its small, heart-shaped fruits, the Honeyhart is a favorite among home gardeners for its sweet, honey-like flavor.
- Orton - This cultivar is popular in home gardens due to its large, flavorful fruits and its resistance to common cherimoya diseases.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Cherimoya trees are subtropical to mild temperate trees that will tolerate light frosts. Cherimoya fruits are best harvested during the cool months of autumn and winter, but can also be picked in the spring.
