Introduction[edit | edit source]

The integumentary system is a complex organ system covering the entire surface of the human body. It comprises the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands and muscles. This system serves as a crucial barrier against external environmental factors. The skin, the largest organ of the body, weighs an average of four kilograms, covers an area of two square meters, and consists of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. There are two primary types of human skin: glabrous skin (hairless skin on the palms and soles) and hair-bearing skin, where hairs are part of pilosebaceous units.

Skin Layers and Functions[edit | edit source]

  • Epidermis: The outermost layer, providing a waterproof barrier and creating our skin tone.
  • Dermis: Beneath the epidermis, containing tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
  • Subcutaneous tissue: Made of fat and connective tissue that houses deeper blood vessels and nerves.
