Liver function test
Liver function tests (LFTs or LFT) are groups of blood tests that give information about the state of a patient's liver. Liver function tests are common tests that are used to see how well the liver is working. Infections, diseases, and damage can affect the liver.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Most liver function tests check the blood for signs of inflammation and damage. These tests can also check for enzymes that are higher than normal, which can be a sign of disease. The liver function test is done after a simple blood test. The normal range for liver function tests can vary greatly depending on the lab that analyzes the test results.
Types of Liver Function Tests[edit | edit source]
Liver function tests can include:
- Alanine transaminase (ALT): This test measures the level of ALT in the blood. ALT is an enzyme that is found mainly in the liver. When liver cells are damaged, they release ALT into the bloodstream which can lead to a significant increase in the enzyme's blood levels.
- Aspartate transaminase (AST): This test measures the level of AST in the blood. AST is an enzyme that is found in several parts of the body, including the liver, heart, and muscles. Like ALT, AST is released into the bloodstream when liver or other cells are damaged.
- Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): This test measures the level of ALP in the blood. ALP is an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, and bone. A higher-than-normal level of ALP can indicate liver disease or damage.
- Bilirubin: This test measures the amount of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a waste product that is produced when red blood cells break down. A higher-than-normal level of bilirubin may indicate different types of liver problems.
- Albumin and total protein: This test measures the amounts of proteins in the blood. Proteins are an important part of how the body works. Albumin is a protein that the liver makes. Total protein measures albumin and all other proteins in blood.
