Louisa Stuart Costello (9 October 1799 – 24 April 1870) was an English writer, poet, and artist. She is best known for her travel writing, historical novels, and contributions to the genre of gothic fiction.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Louisa Stuart Costello was born in Paris, France, to an Irish father and an English mother. Her father, Stephen Costello, was a soldier who served in the Irish Brigade of the French Army. After her father's death, Costello and her family moved to London, where she began her career as an artist and writer.

Career[edit | edit source]

Costello initially gained recognition as a miniature painter, exhibiting her work at the Royal Academy of Arts. However, she soon turned to writing, publishing her first book of poetry, The Maid of the Cyprus Isle and Other Poems, in 1815.

She is perhaps best known for her travel books, which include A Summer Amongst the Bocages and the Vines (1840) and Béarn and the Pyrenees (1844). These works are notable for their detailed descriptions of the landscapes and cultures she encountered, as well as her keen observations on the social conditions of the time.

Costello also wrote several historical novels, such as The Queen's Poisoner (1841) and The Last of the Plantagenets (1850). Her works often featured strong female protagonists and explored themes of love, betrayal, and political intrigue.

Contributions to Gothic Fiction[edit | edit source]

Louisa Stuart Costello made significant contributions to the genre of gothic fiction. Her stories often featured haunted castles, mysterious figures, and supernatural occurrences. Her gothic works include The Rose Garden of Persia (1845) and Specimens of the Early Poetry of France (1835), which combined her interest in history with her flair for the macabre.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

In her later years, Costello continued to write and travel extensively. She remained a prolific author until her death on 24 April 1870 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France.
