- Louisburg was laid out in 1868. It was named after the city of Louisburg, North Carolina, the site of the Battle of Louisburg during the American Revolutionary War.

- Louisburg is located at 38°37′15″N 94°40′59″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.68 square miles, of which, 5.66 square miles is land and 0.02 square miles is water.
