1 Lyndhurst3

Lyndhurst is a heritage-listed former residence and now offices located at 61 Darghan Street, Glebe, in the City of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by the architect John Verge and built from 1833 to 1837. The property is owned by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales.

History[edit | edit source]

Lyndhurst was commissioned by Dr. James Bowman, the Principal Surgeon of the Colony of New South Wales. The house is an example of the Greek Revival style, which was popular in the early 19th century. The design of Lyndhurst is attributed to John Verge, a prominent architect of the time who was responsible for several significant buildings in New South Wales.

The house was completed in 1837 and served as a private residence for many years. In the late 19th century, it was converted into a boarding school and later used for various purposes, including as a factory and offices. In the 1970s, the building was threatened with demolition but was saved by a public campaign and subsequently restored by the Historic Houses Trust.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

Lyndhurst is a two-storey building constructed of stuccoed brick with a slate roof. The design features a symmetrical facade with a central portico supported by Ionic columns. The interior includes a grand staircase, large reception rooms, and several bedrooms. The house is set within landscaped gardens that have been partially restored to reflect their original layout.

Significance[edit | edit source]

Lyndhurst is significant for its association with Dr. James Bowman and its architectural design by John Verge. It is an important example of Greek Revival architecture in Australia and reflects the social and cultural history of the early colony. The building's preservation and restoration have made it a valuable part of Sydney's heritage.

Current Use[edit | edit source]

Today, Lyndhurst is used as offices by the Historic Houses Trust and is occasionally open to the public for tours and special events. The building and its grounds are maintained to preserve their historical integrity and significance.
