MAC Cosmetics
MAC Cosmetics, also known as Make-up Art Cosmetics, is a cosmetics brand founded in Toronto, Canada in 1984 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. The brand has gained international acclaim for its wide range of products, including lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation, and other makeup products. MAC is celebrated for its inclusivity, offering products for all skin tones, genders, and ages. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrities, fashion designers, and pop culture icons.
History[edit | edit source]
MAC Cosmetics was established with the aim to meet the high demands of professional makeup artists, who needed products that could withstand bright lighting conditions during photo shoots and fashion shows. The founders, makeup artist and photographer Frank Toskan and salon owner Frank Angelo, were frustrated by the lack of suitable makeup products on the market. They began creating their own formulations in their kitchen and selling them from Angelo's hair salon in Toronto. The brand quickly gained popularity among professionals in the fashion and beauty industry for its high-quality products and pigmentation.
Product Range[edit | edit source]
MAC offers a wide variety of makeup products, including:
- Lip Products: A vast selection of colors and textures in its lipstick, lip gloss, and lip liner ranges.
- Eye Products: Includes eyeshadows in multiple finishes, mascara, eyeliner, and brow products.
- Face Products: Offers a range of foundation formulas, concealers, blushes, bronzers, and highlighters to suit different skin types and preferences.
- Skincare: Prep and prime products, moisturizers, and removers designed to prepare the skin for makeup application and to maintain skin health.
Collaborations and Collections[edit | edit source]
MAC is renowned for its limited-edition collections and collaborations with celebrities, fashion designers, and iconic figures in pop culture. These collaborations often result in unique packaging and exclusive shades that become highly sought after by collectors and makeup enthusiasts.
Social Responsibility[edit | edit source]
The brand is also committed to social responsibility through its VIVA GLAM campaign, launched in 1994. The campaign raises funds to support people affected by HIV/AIDS. MAC donates 100% of the selling price of VIVA GLAM lipstick and lipgloss to the MAC AIDS Fund.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
Despite its popularity, MAC Cosmetics has faced controversies, particularly regarding its animal testing policies. While the brand states that it does not test on animals and is committed to ending animal testing worldwide, it sells products in countries where animal testing is required by law.
