MIBK
Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is an organic compound with the formula (CH₃)₂CHCH₂C(O)CH₃. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor, commonly used as a solvent in various industries and in chemical synthesis. MIBK is soluble in alcohol and ether but only slightly soluble in water. Due to its effective solvent properties, it finds applications in coatings, varnishes, paints, and inks, as well as in the production of rubber chemicals and as an extraction agent in the mining industry.

MIBK is a medium-boiling point solvent that exhibits good solvency for a wide range of organic materials. It has a boiling point of 116 °C and a flash point of 14 °C. The compound is stable under normal conditions but can form explosive peroxides when exposed to air for prolonged periods.

MIBK is produced industrially through the acid-catalyzed condensation of acetone, a process known as the "acetone condensation process". This involves the conversion of acetone to diacetone alcohol (DAA), followed by dehydration to mesityl oxide, and then hydrogenation to MIBK.

Solvent Uses[edit | edit source]
MIBK's primary use is as a solvent in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, and inks, where it helps to improve the application properties and reduce the viscosity of the formulations. It is also used in the production of rubber chemicals, where it acts as a solvent for the rubber, facilitating the processing and molding of rubber components.

In the mining industry, MIBK is used as an extraction agent for the recovery of precious metals, such as gold and platinum, from their ores. It is particularly effective in the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions, a process known as the Merrill-Crowe process.

Exposure to MIBK can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. It is considered to have low acute toxicity, but prolonged exposure can lead to irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. In high concentrations, MIBK can cause narcotic effects, such as dizziness and headache.
