MIF
Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) is a protein that plays a critical role in the immune system, acting as a pro-inflammatory cytokine and exerting effects on immune cells such as macrophages and T cells. MIF is involved in the regulation of the immune response, inflammation, and cell proliferation. It is encoded by the MIF gene in humans.
Function[edit | edit source]
MIF has several important functions within the immune system. It is known to counter-regulate the effects of glucocorticoids on the immune response, making it a critical component in the body's ability to control inflammation and immune responses. MIF promotes the production of other pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1, and IL-6, enhancing the immune response to pathogens.
