Madras, officially known as Chennai, is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal and is one of the largest cultural, economic, and educational centers in South India.

The city of Madras was established in 1639 when the British East India Company acquired a small strip of land from the local Nayak rulers. The settlement grew around Fort St. George, which became the nucleus of the city. Over the centuries, Madras evolved into a major urban center, playing a pivotal role in the colonial history of India.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Madras is situated on the southeastern coast of India, with a flat coastal plain and a tropical wet and dry climate. The city is bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, and it has several rivers and lakes, including the Cooum River and the Adyar River.
