Malvasia nera

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Malvasia nera is a red Italian wine grape variety that is grown extensively in the southern regions of Italy. It is one of the many sub-varieties of the larger Malvasia family of grapes.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Malvasia nera are believed to be in the Mediterranean region, with historical records dating back to the ancient Greeks. The grape is named after the port city of Monemvasia in southern Greece, from where it was exported to other parts of the Mediterranean.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Malvasia nera is a late-ripening grape that prefers warm, dry climates. It is primarily grown in the Puglia, Basilicata, and Sicily regions of Italy. The grape is often blended with other varieties, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, to produce rich, full-bodied wines.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Malvasia nera are typically deep in color with high alcohol content. They often exhibit flavors of ripe red fruits, spices, and hints of tobacco. While most Malvasia nera wines are meant to be consumed young, some producers make age-worthy examples.

Food Pairing[edit | edit source]

Due to its robust nature, Malvasia nera wines pair well with hearty dishes such as Italian pasta dishes, grilled meats, and aged cheeses.
