Mandya District is a district located in the southern part of the state of Karnataka, India. It is known for its historical significance, cultural heritage, and economic activities centered around agriculture, particularly sugarcane cultivation. The district headquarters is located in the city of Mandya.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Mandya District is situated in the heart of the Karnataka state, bordered by the Kaveri River to the north and west. It shares its boundaries with several other districts: to the northwest is Tumkur District, to the northeast is Ramanagara District, to the east is Bangalore Rural District, to the southeast is Chamarajanagar District, to the south is Mysore District, and to the west is Hassan District. The district's geography is characterized by flat terrain interspersed with rolling hills and fertile plains, making it ideal for agriculture.

The history of Mandya District is deeply intertwined with the history of the Karnataka region. It has been a significant center since the time of the ancient kingdoms of the Ganga Dynasty, Chola Dynasty, and Hoysala Empire. The region came under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century, which marked a period of prosperity and growth. Following the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, the area came under the control of the Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysore, and later, it was part of the British Empire's Madras Presidency until India's independence in 1947.

The economy of Mandya District is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture and related activities being the mainstay of its economy. Sugarcane cultivation is particularly prominent, and the district is one of the leading producers of sugar in Karnataka, hosting several large sugar mills. Mandya District is well-connected by road and rail. The Bangalore-Mysore Highway passes through the district, facilitating easy access to major cities like Bangalore and Mysore. The district also has a well-developed railway network, with the Mandya railway station being an important stop for trains connecting major cities in Karnataka and beyond.

Mandya District is administratively divided into several taluks, including Mandya, Maddur, Malavalli, Srirangapatna, and Nagamangala, among others. Each taluk is governed by a Taluk Panchayat, while the overall administration of the district is overseen by the District Collector.
