Marabou (chocolate)
Marabou is a popular brand of chocolate in Sweden and Norway. It was founded in 1916 by the Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, who also founded the Freia chocolate brand in Norway. Marabou is known for its distinctive yellow packaging and a wide variety of chocolate products.
History[edit | edit source]
Marabou was established in 1916 in Sundbyberg, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden. The brand was named after the marabou stork, which was also the logo of the company. The first Marabou chocolate factory was built in Sundbyberg, and the company quickly gained popularity for its high-quality chocolate products.
In 1969, Marabou merged with the Norwegian company Freia, forming the Scandinavian confectionery giant Nidar. In 1990, Marabou was acquired by the Kraft Foods group, which later became part of Mondelez International.
Products[edit | edit source]
Marabou offers a wide range of chocolate products, including:
- Marabou Milk Chocolate
- Marabou Dark Chocolate
- Marabou Fruit & Nut
- Marabou Daim

The brand is particularly known for its smooth and creamy milk chocolate, which is a favorite among Swedish and Norwegian consumers.
Manufacturing[edit | edit source]
Marabou chocolates are produced using high-quality ingredients, including cocoa beans sourced from various regions around the world. The production process involves roasting, grinding, and conching the cocoa beans to create a smooth and rich chocolate base. The chocolate is then molded into various shapes and sizes, packaged, and distributed to retailers.
Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]
Marabou has become an iconic brand in Sweden and Norway, with a strong presence in the confectionery market. The brand is often associated with Swedish and Norwegian traditions and is a popular choice for holidays and special occasions. Marabou chocolates are also exported to various countries, making them a beloved treat for chocolate lovers worldwide.
