Mario Francesco Batali (born September 19, 1960) is an American chef, restaurateur, and television personality. He is known for his Italian cuisine, as well as his appearances on various cooking shows and his many successful restaurants.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Batali was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, to parents of Italian descent. His father, Armandino Batali, owned Salumi, a popular meat-curing shop in Seattle. Batali attended Rutgers University, where he studied Spanish Theater and Business Management.

Career[edit | edit source]

After college, Batali worked as a sous chef in a California restaurant before moving to New York City in 1985. He worked at several restaurants in the city before becoming the head chef at Pó, an Italian restaurant in Manhattan's West Village. In 1993, he opened his first restaurant, Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, which quickly gained critical acclaim and earned him a James Beard Foundation award for "Best New Restaurant" in 1998.

Batali went on to open several other successful restaurants in New York City, including Lupa Osteria Romana, Otto Enoteca Pizzeria, and Del Posto. He also expanded his culinary empire to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Singapore. Controversies[edit | edit source]

In December 2017, Batali was accused of sexual misconduct by several women who worked with him. Batali stepped down from his restaurants and television shows and issued an apology, stating that "much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted." In May 2019, Batali was charged with indecent assault and battery in connection with a 2017 incident in a Boston restaurant. He pleaded not guilty and the case is ongoing.
