Mark T. Gladwin

Mark T. Gladwin is an American physician, researcher, and academic known for his contributions to the field of pulmonology and vascular biology. He is particularly recognized for his work on nitric oxide biology and its implications in sickle cell disease and pulmonary hypertension.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Mark T. Gladwin was born in the United States. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Princeton University, where he developed an interest in the biological sciences. He then attended University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, earning his MD degree. During his medical training, Gladwin became fascinated with the mechanisms of vascular diseases, which would later become a central theme in his research career.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Gladwin undertook residency training in internal medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University. He then pursued a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he began his research on nitric oxide and its role in vascular biology.

Research contributions[edit | edit source]

Gladwin's research has significantly advanced the understanding of nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. His work elucidated the role of nitric oxide in the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease, demonstrating how its dysregulation contributes to vaso-occlusive crisis and hemolysis.

In addition to his work on sickle cell disease, Gladwin has made important contributions to the study of pulmonary hypertension, a condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lungs' arteries. His research has explored the molecular pathways involved in the disease, leading to potential therapeutic targets.

Academic leadership[edit | edit source]

Gladwin has held several prominent academic positions. He served as the Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In this role, he led numerous research initiatives and mentored a new generation of physician-scientists.

In 2021, Gladwin was appointed as the Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he continues to promote research and education in medical sciences.

Awards and honors[edit | edit source]

Throughout his career, Gladwin has received numerous awards for his contributions to medical research and education. He is a member of several prestigious medical societies and has been recognized for his work in advancing the understanding of vascular diseases.
