Marplan

Marplan (Isocarboxazid) is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used in the treatment of depression. It is part of a class of antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) that alter the balance of certain chemicals in the brain to help improve mood and feelings of well-being.

Mechanism of Action

Marplan works by inhibiting the action of a chemical substance known as monoamine oxidase in the nervous system. Monoamine oxidase is involved in removing the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine from the brain. By slowing their degradation, Marplan prolongs the mood lightening effect of any released neurotransmitters, which helps alleviate symptoms of depression.

Uses

Marplan is used to treat certain types of depression that do not respond to other treatments. It is thought to work by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain (norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin).

Side Effects

Common side effects of Marplan include dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, and weakness. Serious side effects may include unusual or severe mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, angry outbursts, thoughts of suicide), rapid or irregular heartbeat, swelling of the hands or feet, and difficulty urinating.

Precautions

Before taking Marplan, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are allergic to it; or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Interactions

Marplan can interact with a number of other medications, including other antidepressants, certain pain medications, and certain high blood pressure medications. It is important to inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking before starting treatment with Marplan.
