Mary-Louise Parker (born August 2, 1964) is an American actress and writer. She is best known for her roles in television series such as Weeds and The West Wing, as well as her performances in films like Fried Green Tomatoes and Red.

Mary-Louise Parker was born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She is the youngest of four children. Her father, John Morgan Parker, was a judge who served in the U.S. Army, and her mother, Caroline Louise (née Morell), was of Swedish descent. Parker spent parts of her childhood in Tennessee and Texas, as well as in Thailand, Germany, and France.

Parker began her acting career in the late 1980s with a role on the soap opera Ryan's Hope. She made her Broadway debut in 1990 in Prelude to a Kiss, for which she received a Tony Award nomination.

Breakthrough and film career[edit | edit source]

Parker's breakthrough role came in 1991 with the film Fried Green Tomatoes. She continued to build her film career with roles in The Client (1994), Bullets over Broadway (1994), and Boys on the Side (1995).

In the early 2000s, Parker gained critical acclaim for her role as Amy Gardner on the television series The West Wing. She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance.

Parker's most notable television role came in 2005 when she was cast as Nancy Botwin in the series Weeds. The show ran for eight seasons, and Parker received several awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.
