Dr. Mary Poonen Lukose (1886–1976) was a pioneering figure in the field of medicine in India, particularly noted for her contributions in the state of Kerala. She was the first female surgeon from Kerala and served as the first woman Obstetrician and Gynecologist in the state. Her remarkable career is a testament to her dedication to healthcare and women's education in a time when both fields were predominantly male-dominated.

Born into the Poonen family in Kottayam, Kerala, Mary Poonen showed an early interest in medicine, a passion that was unusual for women in India during the early 20th century. She played a crucial role in establishing the Women and Children's Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, which was among the first hospitals in the region to focus specifically on the healthcare needs of this demographic.
