Maternal health is crucial for the well-being of mothers, their children, and the health system and society as a whole.

Overview

Improving maternal health is one of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), specifically Goal 5: to improve maternal health. The target is to reduce the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters between 1990 and 2015, and to achieve universal access to reproductive health. Despite significant efforts, the global community still faces challenges in reducing the number of deaths and improving health outcomes for mothers.

Causes of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity

The major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths are:

• High blood pressure during pregnancy (pre-eclampsia and eclampsia)
• Complications from delivery
• Unsafe abortion.

The remainder of maternal deaths are caused by or associated with diseases such as malaria, AIDS, and cardiovascular diseases, all of which may be aggravated by pregnancy.

Improving maternal health involves several key steps, including:

• Access to reproductive health services and family planning.
• Skilled care before, during, and after childbirth.
• Emergency obstetric care for all who need it.
• Postnatal care for mothers and newborns.

Challenges

Challenges to improving maternal health include:

• Lack of access to health care services, particularly in rural areas.
• High levels of poverty and education barriers.
• Cultural practices that limit women's access to health care services.
• Inadequate infrastructure and health care systems.
