Mathews County, Virginia is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,533. Its county seat is Mathews.

Mathews County was established in 1791 from Gloucester County. It was named for Thomas Mathews, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates at the time. The county has a rich history, including significant involvement in the American Civil War.

Mathews County is situated on the eastern tip of the Middle Peninsula, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the east and the Mobjack Bay to the south. The county has a total area of 252 square miles, of which 86 square miles is land and 166 square miles (66%) is water.
