Matt Williams (third baseman)
Matt Williams (born November 28, 1965) is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) third baseman and current baseball executive. Over his 17-year career, Williams played for the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He is known for his powerful hitting and exceptional defensive skills.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Williams was born in Bishop, California, and attended Carson High School in Carson City, Nevada. He later attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he played college baseball for the Rebels.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
San Francisco Giants[edit | edit source]
Williams was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 1986 Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut on April 11, 1987. Williams quickly established himself as a key player for the Giants, known for his power hitting and solid defense at third base. He was a five-time All-Star and won four Gold Glove Awards during his time with the Giants.
Cleveland Indians[edit | edit source]
In 1997, Williams was traded to the Cleveland Indians. He played a crucial role in helping the Indians reach the 1997 World Series, where they were defeated by the Florida Marlins in seven games.
Arizona Diamondbacks[edit | edit source]
Williams was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998. He continued to perform at a high level and was instrumental in the Diamondbacks' success, including their victory in the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees.
Post-Playing Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring as a player, Williams transitioned into coaching and management. He served as a coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks and later became the manager of the Washington Nationals in 2014. Williams was named the National League Manager of the Year in his first season with the Nationals.

Williams has been involved in various business ventures and charitable activities. He is married and has children.
