Matthew Lukwiya


Matthew Lukwiya (1957 – 5 December 2000) was a prominent Ugandan physician and epidemiologist who played a significant role in combating the Ebola outbreak in Gulu in 2000. He is widely recognized for his dedication and selflessness, which ultimately led to his death from the disease he fought so tirelessly against.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Lukwiya was born in 1957 in Uganda. He pursued his medical education at Makerere University, one of the most prestigious universities in Africa. After graduating, he furthered his studies in epidemiology in London, United Kingdom at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Career[edit | edit source]

Upon his return to Uganda, Lukwiya served as the Medical Superintendent of St. Mary's Hospital Lacor in Gulu, Northern Uganda. During his tenure, he was instrumental in transforming the hospital into a leading medical institution in the region.

In 2000, Lukwiya led the fight against an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Gulu. He implemented strict infection control measures, established an Ebola ward, and coordinated with international health organizations to manage the crisis. His efforts were crucial in containing the outbreak, which resulted in over 400 deaths.

Death and legacy[edit | edit source]

Lukwiya contracted Ebola while caring for infected patients and died on 5 December 2000. His death was a significant loss to the medical community in Uganda and globally. He is remembered for his dedication, courage, and commitment to his patients and community.

Lukwiya's work during the Ebola outbreak has been widely recognized. He was posthumously awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross in 2001. His life and work continue to inspire many in the field of public health and epidemiology.
