Medical nutrition therapy

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a therapeutic approach to treating medical conditions and their associated symptoms via the use of a specifically tailored diet devised and monitored by a medical doctor physician or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). The therapy aims at fixing nutritional deficiencies and preventing the buildup of harmful substances in the body.

Overview[edit | edit source]

MNT involves the assessment of the nutritional status of a patient with a condition, disease, or injury that puts them at risk. This therapy can help patients manage chronic diseases, maintain a healthy weight, and improve their overall health. The diet is devised based on the patient's medical and family history, physical examination, functional examination, and dietary history.

Role in Disease Management[edit | edit source]

MNT is used in the management of a variety of diseases and conditions, including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. It can also be used in the management of food allergies and intolerances, gastrointestinal disorders, and eating disorders.

Process[edit | edit source]

The process of MNT involves an initial assessment, followed by the creation of a personalized nutrition plan. The plan is then implemented and monitored over time, with adjustments made as necessary. The therapy is often part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes medication and physical activity.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

The benefits of MNT can include improved health outcomes, reduced healthcare costs, and improved quality of life. It can also help patients better manage their health conditions and reduce their reliance on medication.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

While MNT can be beneficial, it is not a cure-all. It should be used in conjunction with other treatments and not as a replacement for medical treatment. Additionally, it requires a commitment from the patient to follow the diet plan and make necessary lifestyle changes.
