Melania Trump (born Melanija Knavs; April 26, 1970) is a Slovene-American former model and businesswoman who served as the First Lady of the United States from 2017 to 2021, as the wife of the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Melania Trump was born in Novo Mesto, in the then Socialist Republic of Slovenia, part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. She grew up in Sevnica, in the Lower Sava Valley. Her father, Viktor Knavs, managed car and motorcycle dealerships for a state-owned vehicle manufacturer, and her mother, Amalija, worked as a patternmaker at a children's clothing manufacturer. Melania has an older sister, Ines, and an older half-brother whom she reportedly has never met.

Melania attended the Secondary School of Design and Photography in Ljubljana and later studied architecture and design at the University of Ljubljana for one year before pursuing a modeling career.

Modeling Career[edit | edit source]

Melania began her modeling career at the age of 16 and signed with a modeling agency in Milan at 18. She worked in Milan and Paris before moving to New York City in 1996. In New York, she worked with well-known photographers and appeared on the covers of various magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and InStyle.

Marriage to Donald Trump[edit | edit source]

Melania met Donald Trump at a party in 1998. They became engaged in 2004 and married on January 22, 2005, at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida. The reception was held at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's estate. The couple has one son, Barron Trump, born in 2006.

First Lady of the United States[edit | edit source]

Melania Trump became the First Lady of the United States on January 20, 2017, following her husband's inauguration as president. As First Lady, she focused on initiatives related to children's well-being, including her "Be Best" campaign, which promoted children's social and emotional health, and addressed issues such as cyberbullying and opioid abuse.

During her tenure, Melania was known for her fashion choices and for maintaining a relatively low public profile compared to previous First Ladies. She was the first naturalized citizen to become First Lady and the second First Lady born outside the United States, after Louisa Adams.

Post-First Lady Life[edit | edit source]

After leaving the White House in January 2021, Melania Trump has maintained a private life, occasionally appearing at public events and focusing on her family and personal interests.
