Methandrostenolone

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Methandrostenolone is a synthetic anabolic steroid that was developed by John Ziegler and the pharmaceutical company Ciba in the 1950s. It is also known by the brand name Dianabol and is often referred to by the abbreviation Dbol. Methandrostenolone is a derivative of testosterone, modified so that the hormone's androgenic (masculinizing) properties are reduced and its anabolic (tissue building) properties preserved.

History[edit | edit source]

Methandrostenolone was first synthesized in the United States in the 1950s by John Ziegler, a doctor who was working with athletes at the time. He collaborated with the pharmaceutical company Ciba to develop the drug, which was marketed under the brand name Dianabol.

Medical Use[edit | edit source]

Methandrostenolone was originally used in the medical field for various treatments. It was prescribed for conditions such as muscle wasting diseases, severe burns, and slow growth in children. However, its use in medicine has declined due to its potential side effects and the development of more effective treatments.

Non-Medical Use[edit | edit source]

Despite its medical uses, Methandrostenolone is best known for its popularity in the world of bodybuilding and performance enhancement. It is often used by athletes and bodybuilders for its ability to increase muscle mass and strength rapidly. However, its use in sports is considered illegal and unethical due to its potential health risks and the unfair advantage it provides.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

The use of Methandrostenolone can lead to a number of potential side effects. These include liver damage, cardiovascular disease, changes in mood and behavior, and the development of masculine physical characteristics in women. Long-term use can also lead to drug dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

In many countries, including the United States, Methandrostenolone is classified as a controlled substance. This means that it is illegal to possess, use, or distribute the drug without a prescription. In sports, its use is banned by most major athletic organizations.
