Methenamine hippurate
Methenamine hippurate is a pharmaceutical drug used primarily in the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is a compound of methenamine, an antibacterial agent, and hippuric acid, a natural acid found in the urine.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Methenamine hippurate works by decomposing at an acidic pH to form formaldehyde and ammonia. The formaldehyde is toxic to bacteria, which helps to eliminate the infection. The hippurate component of the drug also has some antibacterial properties and helps to acidify the urine.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Methenamine hippurate is used to prevent recurrent UTIs, especially in individuals who have chronic issues with these infections. It is also used in the treatment of acute UTIs, although it is not a first-line treatment.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, methenamine hippurate can cause side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause a severe allergic reaction.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Methenamine hippurate can interact with other medications, including sulphonamides and anticholinergic drugs. It is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken when starting a new medication.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
Methenamine hippurate should not be used in individuals with severe liver disease, kidney disease, or dehydration. It is also contraindicated in individuals who are allergic to any component of the drug.
Dosage[edit | edit source]
The dosage of methenamine hippurate varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. It is typically taken orally, with the dose adjusted based on the severity of the infection and the individual's response to treatment.
