Metoidioplasty

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Metoidioplasty is a surgical procedure often performed as part of female to male gender reassignment surgery. It involves the creation of a phallus from the clitoris, which has been enlarged through hormone therapy.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

The procedure begins with the release of the ligament that holds the clitoris in place, allowing it to extend further from the body. The urethra is then lengthened and rerouted through the neophallus. This allows for urination while standing. In some cases, a scrotoplasty may also be performed to create a scrotum from the labia majora.

Advantages and Disadvantages[edit | edit source]

One of the main advantages of metoidioplasty is that it allows for sexual sensation to be maintained, as the clitoris is not removed. It also typically results in a shorter recovery time and fewer complications than phalloplasty, another type of female to male gender reassignment surgery. However, the size of the neophallus is limited by the size of the clitoris, and may not be large enough for penetrative sex.
