Miami-Dade County, Florida

Miami-Dade County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 2,701,767, making it the most populous county in Florida and the seventh-most populous county in the United States. The county seat is Miami, which is also the largest city within the county.

Miami-Dade County was created on January 18, 1836, under the name Dade County. It was named after Major Francis L. Dade, a soldier killed in 1835 during the Second Seminole War. The name was changed to Miami-Dade County in 1997 to acknowledge the international recognition of the city of Miami.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Miami-Dade County is located in the southeastern part of Florida, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Broward County to the north, Collier County to the northwest, and Monroe County to the south and west. The county encompasses a total area of 2,431 square miles, of which 1,946 square miles is land and 485 square miles is water.

Miami-Dade County has a unique form of government known as a "two-tier federation." The county government provides services countywide and also serves as the local government for unincorporated areas. The county is governed by a mayor and a Board of County Commissioners.

Miami-Dade County has a diverse economy with major industries including tourism, international trade, finance, and healthcare. The PortMiami is one of the largest cargo ports in the United States and a major hub for cruise ships. The county is also home to numerous multinational corporations and financial institutions.

The county is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth-largest public school district in the United States. Higher education institutions in the county include University of Miami, Florida International University, and Miami Dade College.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Miami-Dade County has an extensive transportation network that includes Miami International Airport, one of the busiest international airports in the world. Public transportation is provided by Miami-Dade Transit, which operates the Metrorail, Metromover, and bus services.

Miami-Dade County is known for its cultural diversity, with a significant portion of the population being of Hispanic or Latino origin. The county is a major center for Hispanic culture, media, and commerce in the United States.
