Michael Callen

Michael Callen (April 11, 1955 – December 27, 1993) was an American singer, songwriter, author, and AIDS activist. He was a prominent figure in the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the United States and made significant contributions to the understanding and advocacy of HIV/AIDS.

Michael Callen was born in Rising Sun, Indiana. He moved to New York City in the late 1970s to pursue a career in music. Callen was openly gay and became involved in the city's vibrant LGBT community.

Music Career[edit | edit source]

Callen was a founding member of the a cappella group The Flirtations. The group was known for their harmonious vocals and LGBT-themed performances. Callen's music often addressed themes of love, loss, and resilience, particularly in the context of the AIDS crisis.

AIDS Activism[edit | edit source]

In 1982, Callen was diagnosed with AIDS. He quickly became an outspoken advocate for people living with the disease. He co-authored the influential book How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach, which was one of the first guides to safe sex practices. Callen was also a founding member of the People With AIDS Coalition and the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP).
