Michael E. DeBakey

Michael Ellis DeBakey (1908-2008) was an American cardiovascular surgeon, medical educator, and researcher. He was a pioneer in the field of cardiovascular surgery and developed many of the techniques and procedures that are still in use today. He is best known for his work on the development of the artificial heart-lung machine, which made open-heart surgery possible, and the DeBakey ventricular assist device, which is used to treat heart failure. He performed over 60,000 surgeries during his career and received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medicine.
