Michael J. Kuhar

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Michael J. Kuhar is an American neuroscientist and pharmacologist known for his pioneering work in the field of neuropharmacology. He is currently the Candler Professor of Neuropharmacology at Emory University, where he has made significant contributions to the understanding of the brain's reward system and the neurobiology of addiction.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Kuhar was born and raised in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Detroit, before going on to earn his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Michigan.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Kuhar joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a research scientist. During his tenure at the NIH, he made several groundbreaking discoveries in the field of neuropharmacology, including the identification of the dopamine transporter, a protein that plays a crucial role in the brain's reward system.

In 1980, Kuhar moved to Emory University, where he continues to conduct research on the neurobiology of addiction. His work at Emory has led to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying drug addiction and has paved the way for the development of new treatments for addiction.

Contributions to Neuroscience[edit | edit source]

Kuhar's most significant contribution to neuroscience is his discovery of the dopamine transporter. This protein is responsible for the reuptake of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the brain's reward system. Kuhar's research has shown that drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and amphetamines, exert their effects by blocking the dopamine transporter, leading to an increase in the levels of dopamine in the brain.

In addition to his work on the dopamine transporter, Kuhar has also conducted extensive research on the role of the brain's reward system in addiction. His research has provided valuable insights into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying addiction and has contributed to the development of new treatments for addiction.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Kuhar has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to neuroscience and pharmacology, including the Nathan B. Eddy Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence and the Axelrod Award from the Society for Neuroscience.
