Michael Leib
Michael Leib (January 8, 1760 – December 22, 1822) was an American physician, politician, and military officer from Pennsylvania. He served in various political offices, including as a member of the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, and the Pennsylvania State Senate.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Michael Leib was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He pursued classical studies and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1780. He studied medicine and began practicing as a physician in Philadelphia.
Military Service[edit | edit source]
During the American Revolutionary War, Leib served as a private in the Continental Army. He participated in several key battles and was known for his dedication and service to the cause of American independence.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Pennsylvania State Senate[edit | edit source]
Leib's political career began in the Pennsylvania State Senate, where he served from 1795 to 1798. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party and was known for his advocacy of states' rights and limited federal government.
United States House of Representatives[edit | edit source]
In 1798, Leib was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Pennsylvania's 1st congressional district. He served in the House from 1799 to 1806. During his tenure, he was a strong supporter of Thomas Jefferson and his policies.
United States Senate[edit | edit source]
Leib was elected to the United States Senate in 1806, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of George Logan. He served in the Senate until 1814. As a senator, he continued to support Jeffersonian principles and was involved in various legislative efforts.
Post-Senate Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the Senate, Leib returned to Pennsylvania and resumed his medical practice. He also served as the postmaster of Philadelphia from 1814 to 1815.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Michael Leib died on December 22, 1822, in Philadelphia. He was buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Leib's contributions to both medicine and politics are remembered as part of Pennsylvania's rich history.
