Minitran
Minitran is a brand name for a transdermal patch used in the treatment of angina pectoris, a condition characterized by chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart. The active ingredient in Minitran is nitroglycerin, which is a type of nitrate that helps to relax and widen blood vessels, improving blood flow to the heart muscle.
Medical Uses[edit | edit source]
Minitran is primarily used for the prevention of angina attacks. It is not intended for the immediate relief of acute angina episodes. The transdermal patch allows for the continuous release of nitroglycerin over a 24-hour period, providing a sustained therapeutic effect.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Nitroglycerin, the active component of Minitran, works by converting to nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator that relaxes the smooth muscles in blood vessel walls, leading to the dilation of both arteries and veins. This reduces the workload on the heart and decreases oxygen demand, thereby alleviating angina symptoms.
Administration[edit | edit source]
Minitran is administered as a transdermal patch applied to the skin. The patch should be placed on a clean, dry, and hairless area of the upper body or upper arm. It is important to rotate the application site to avoid skin irritation. The patch is typically worn for 12-14 hours each day, followed by a patch-free interval of 10-12 hours to prevent the development of tolerance to nitroglycerin.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Minitran include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Skin irritation at the application site
Severe side effects are rare but may include:
- Severe hypotension
- Allergic reactions
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Patients using Minitran should avoid consuming alcohol and using other medications that can lower blood pressure, such as phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil). It is also important to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken to avoid potential drug interactions.
