Mission Barrio Adentro
Mission Barrio Adentro (Inside the Neighborhood Mission) is a program initiated by the Government of Venezuela with the help of Cuban medical professionals to bring medical aid to impoverished areas in Venezuela. The program was launched in 2003 by the Chávez government.
History[edit | edit source]
Mission Barrio Adentro was launched in 2003 by the Chávez government. The program was initiated with the help of Cuban medical professionals to bring medical aid to impoverished areas in Venezuela. The program was part of a series of Bolivarian Missions aimed at providing public services to improve economic, cultural, and social conditions.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
The main objective of the mission is to provide comprehensive and free healthcare services to the Venezuelan population, especially those living in remote and marginalized areas. The mission also aims to promote preventive health measures and to train medical professionals in the country.
Implementation[edit | edit source]
The program is implemented through a network of clinics, diagnostic centers, and rehabilitation units. The clinics, known as consultorios populares, are staffed by Cuban doctors and provide primary healthcare services. The diagnostic centers, known as Centros de Diagnóstico Integral (CDI), are equipped with advanced medical equipment and provide specialized medical services. The rehabilitation units, known as Salas de Rehabilitación Integral (SRI), provide physical therapy and rehabilitation services.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
The program has been criticized for its dependence on Cuban doctors and for the quality of its services. Critics argue that the program is politically motivated and is used by the government to gain political support.
