Mission Bhagiratha

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Mission Bhagiratha is a water supply project initiated by the Government of Telangana, India, aimed at providing safe and sustainable piped water (tap water) to every household in the state. The project is named after the legendary sage Bhagiratha, who is credited with bringing the Ganges to earth, according to Hindu mythology. The initiative reflects the government's commitment to addressing water scarcity and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Background[edit | edit source]

Telangana has historically faced challenges with water scarcity and quality, primarily due to its geographical location and climatic conditions. Prior to the project's inception, a significant portion of the state's population relied on groundwater, which is often contaminated, or distant water sources, leading to numerous health and economic issues. Recognizing the critical need for a reliable and clean water supply, the state government launched Mission Bhagiratha in 2016.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objective of Mission Bhagiratha is to provide 100 liters of clean drinking water per person in rural areas and 150 liters per person in urban areas. The project aims to:

  • Ensure the availability of clean drinking water to all households in Telangana.
  • Eliminate waterborne diseases in the state.
  • Reduce the burden on women, often responsible for fetching water from distant sources.
  • Promote water conservation and efficient use through sustainable practices.

Implementation[edit | edit source]

The project involves the construction of a vast network of pipelines, water treatment plants, and overhead service reservoirs to treat and transport water from various sources, including rivers and reservoirs, to households across the state. The government has collaborated with several national and international firms for the technical and infrastructural development of the project.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its implementation, Mission Bhagiratha has significantly improved access to clean water in Telangana, benefiting millions of residents. The project has also been recognized for its innovative approach to addressing water scarcity and has set a precedent for similar initiatives in other regions.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its success, the project faces challenges, including the high cost of maintenance, water quality management, and ensuring the sustainability of water sources. The government continues to work on addressing these issues to ensure the long-term success of the project.
