Mitochondrial dynamics protein MID49

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Mitochondrial dynamics protein MID49 (MID49) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MIEF1 gene. MID49 is involved in the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics, a complex process that includes the movement, growth, and morphological changes of mitochondria within cells.

Function[edit | edit source]

MID49 is a key player in the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics, which is crucial for maintaining the proper function and survival of cells. It acts as a receptor for the DRP1, a large GTPase that mediates the division of mitochondria. By recruiting DRP1 to the mitochondrial outer membrane, MID49 facilitates the fission process, leading to the division of mitochondria into smaller units.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the function of MID49 have been associated with various diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. In particular, the overexpression of MID49 has been observed in certain types of cancer, suggesting a potential role in tumor growth and progression. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of MID49 in human health and disease.
