History[edit | edit source]

Mitropa was founded during the First World War, in 1916, as a subsidiary of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The company's name is derived from "Mitteleuropa", which means "Central Europe" in German. Mitropa's original purpose was to provide catering services for sleeping and dining cars on the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn.

In the years following the Second World War, Mitropa was divided into two separate companies: one in East Germany and one in West Germany. The East German company continued to operate under the name Mitropa, while the West German company was renamed to DSG.

After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the two companies were merged back together under the Mitropa name. Today, Mitropa operates a variety of hospitality services, including restaurants, cafés, and hotels.
