Moe's Southwest Grill was founded by Raving Brands in December 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. The name "Moe's" is an acronym for "Musicians, Outlaws and Entertainers," reflecting the restaurant's theme of paying tribute to popular culture. The restaurant's menu items are named after famous pop culture references, such as the "Art Vandalay" burrito, named after a fictional character from the television show Seinfeld.
In 2007, Moe's Southwest Grill was purchased by Focus Brands, an affiliate of private equity firm Roark Capital Group. As of 2020, there are over 700 Moe's Southwest Grill locations in the United States and abroad.
